Safe Suffolk Renters – Research Advisory Group Project

ELA attended an interesting meeting with Safe Suffolk Renters last week.  It focused on the Research Advisory Group which is a two-year project due to end in March 2025, although indication currently shows that this may extend, particularly with the changes from the Renters’ Rights Bill approaching.

Their encouraging message and feedback from their research project was very much a “not bashing landlords” tone and they are very focused on the importance of responsible landlords being fully supported.

Overall, they found their research has shown that due to the quality of many landlords’ accommodation, security of property and swift response to repairs, tenants have reported to be really happy with their landlord and current tenancies.

They also spoke of the intrinsic link between health and housing needs and questioned how that collaborative space will look, along with various projects planned to take place to embed the important relationship between the two.

It was sad to hear that their findings also discovered that major life events have triggered, often older people, to seek rental properties, but in many cases, they have found comfort and security through the private rental sector.

Their quote within the meeting from one Landlord stated,  “it’s my house but it’s your home”.

They concluded reassuringly, and we do too, that landlords will get through this difficult time and will continue to be an important support and need within the housing market.

The University of Suffolk would like to hear from as many landlords in the county as possible to understand the wide range of experiences.
